In a bid to maintain its leadership in technology and bolster national security, the United States is tightening restrictions on China’s access to quantum computing technologies. The Department of Commerce has added 37 Chinese quantum technology firms to the Entity List under the Export Administration Regulations, thereby limiting the flow of US resources to these entities.
US-China Tensions Escalate
Companies found to be engaging in quantum computing research deemed a potential threat to US national security and those implicated in last year’s espionage incident have faced sanctions. Among the 22 companies listed, some are directly linked to China’s Ministry of Commerce and government efforts to promote quantum research or attempts to acquire US technology for quantum computing.
Additionally, 11 companies on the list are implicated in the espionage incident, where spy balloons allegedly operated on behalf of China were detected in US airspace last year. The remaining four companies are reported to be developing quantum technologies for use in military unmanned aerial systems.
As tensions between the US and China continue to rise, restrictions on access to critical technologies such as quantum computing reflect efforts to safeguard national interests.
