The Rebel Hits the Stage: Features and Price of the New BMW M5
BMW, a titan in the German automotive industry, has finally lifted the veil on its latest and unruly creation, eagerly anticipated by the automotive community. The new BMW M5, dubbed the G90, makes a grand entrance in both Sedan and Touring (station wagon) versions, boasting a significant curb weight of 2.4 tons. However, it’s powered by a formidable 4.4-liter V8 plug-in hybrid unit, producing 727 horsepower. Although this engine setup might sound familiar to car aficionados—the same engine was introduced in the XM series—it marks a robust continuation in the new M5.
The internal combustion engine alone generates 585 horsepower, supported by a 197 horsepower electric motor, summing up to a staggering 727 horsepower and 1000 Nm of torque.
In terms of design, the new M5 stays true to BMW’s iconic styling cues but also highlights its hybrid nature. It measures 5.09 meters in length and 1.97 meters in width, making it one of the largest M5 models to date.
Despite its hefty frame, which might seem like a drawback, BMW engineers have clarified that the additional 500 kilograms primarily stem from the electric motor. This addition not only enhances the vehicle’s speed but also its efficiency and performance dynamics.
The new BMW M5 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds, and reaching 200 km/h takes only 10.9 seconds. While its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, the full potential of the engine could push it to 305 km/h.
Transmission duties are handled by an 8-speed automatic gearbox, complemented by a predominantly rear-wheel-drive setup that can switch to all-wheel drive. For those who enjoy a bit of tail-sliding fun, the vehicle also offers a 2-wheel-drive mode once the ESP is disabled.
Production of the new BMW M5 is set to begin in July at the Dingolfing plant. As for pricing, the new M5 Sedan will start at 144,000 euros, with the Touring model slightly higher at 146,000 euros.
