TikTok Starts Tagging AI-Generated Content

TikTok has announced that content generated by artificial intelligence on other platforms will now be automatically tagged. Users will be able to see which videos and photos are created using AI.

TikTok is combating the misuse of artificial intelligence. Content generated by AI has been tagged for over a year on the platform, but now AI-generated visuals from OpenAI and other platforms will also be tagged.

Adobe, Microsoft, and other companies jointly established C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity), whose technology will be used by TikTok to read content identity information. Content identity information is designed to add metadata to AI content to facilitate AI tagging. AI tagging is being implemented in visuals and videos, and will soon be used in audio content as well. AI-generated content on TikTok will have a label under the user’s name stating “Generated by AI.”

Gradual rollout of tagging may occur as Content Identity Information needs to be included for content identification and tagging. Both the manufacturer of the creative AI tool used to generate content and the platform distributing the content must agree to use the industry standard for the system to work. Alphabet-owned Google’s YouTube, as well as Meta Platforms, the owner of Instagram and Facebook, have also announced plans to use Content Identity Information.
