Starlink Achieves First-Ever Phone-to-Phone Video Call with “Direct to Cell” Technology

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has marked a significant milestone by facilitating the first-ever video call between smartphones using Starlink satellites equipped with Direct to Cell (DTC) technology. As Starlink surpasses 6,000 satellites in orbit, the company continues to push the boundaries of global communication by integrating direct cellular connectivity into its satellite network.

Pioneering Direct to Cell Video Calls

Since 2022, SpaceX has been striving to enable satellite connectivity for smartphones through its Starlink network. The recent breakthrough in video calling represents a major achievement in this effort. SpaceX has established partnerships with T-Mobile and other international operators to test and deploy this technology. The initial tests have been conducted using T-Mobile’s network infrastructure.

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), SpaceX announced that it successfully conducted a video call between two unmodified smartphones using the Starlink Direct to Cell network. While the video quality was noted to be somewhat low, this accomplishment is significant given the satellites’ orbital distances of hundreds of kilometers.

Expanding Direct to Cell Capabilities

Currently, there are 38 Starlink DTC satellites in orbit. As the number of these satellites increases, improvements in video call quality are expected. Earlier this year, tests demonstrated that these satellites could achieve maximum download speeds of 17 Mb/s using a Samsung phone. This performance metric highlights the potential for robust data transmission capabilities through the Starlink DTC network.

SpaceX plans to launch its cellular Starlink service to T-Mobile customers by the end of this year, aiming to provide seamless messaging, voice, and video communication in regions lacking traditional cellular infrastructure. This initiative is contingent upon receiving the necessary approvals from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States.

The ability to conduct video calls via satellite represents a leap forward in global communication technology. By bypassing traditional cellular towers and relying on satellites, Starlink’s Direct to Cell service could significantly enhance connectivity in remote and underserved areas.
