Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Final’ Film: “The Movie Critic”

Everything About Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Final’ Film, The Movie Critic

Quentin Tarantino, the renowned filmmaker, has recently announced that his upcoming film, The Movie Critic, will be his last. With this being his tenth (or eleventh, depending on how you count the Kill Bill series) film, Tarantino has expressed his belief that directors do not typically improve with age. In an interview with Playboy in 2012, he stated, “Usually the worst films in their filmography are those last four at the end. I am all about my filmography, and one bad film messes up three good ones. I don’t want that bad, out-of-touch comedy in my filmography, the movie that makes people think, ‘Oh man, he still thinks it’s 20 years ago.’ When directors get out-of-date, it’s not pretty.”

The Movie Critic has entered “pre-pre-production” in June 2023, although progress may have been hindered due to the ongoing strike by the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). Despite this setback, here’s everything we currently know about The Movie Critic, including plot hints from Tarantino, casting rumors (Brad Pitt), and location details.

The Titular Movie Critic Works at a “Porno Rag”

Tarantino revealed to Deadline that the protagonist of his tenth film is based on a real person. During his teenage years, one of Tarantino’s jobs was restocking a vending machine that dispensed pornography magazines. Although the legality of this job for a teenager is questionable, Tarantino developed a deep appreciation for the writing of a film critic who worked for a “porno rag.” He chose not to disclose the critic’s name but described him as a talented and cynical writer. Tarantino compared his reviews to a blend of early Howard Stern and what Travis Bickle (from Taxi Driver) might be like if he were a film critic. The critic wrote with the wisdom of a 55-year-old, despite being in his early to mid-30s. Unfortunately, he passed away in his late 30s, and further research suggests that his death was related to complications from alcoholism.

Tarantino is Filming in California This Fall

According to a listing in Production Weekly, The Movie Critic is scheduled to begin filming in Los Angeles this fall. This news aligns with previous reports from Variety in 2023, which mentioned the film under the working title “Untitled Quentin Tarantino Project.” As filming commences in California, fans eagerly anticipate the realization of Tarantino’s vision for his final film.

While specific details about the plot of The Movie Critic remain scarce, the combination of Tarantino’s unique storytelling style and his personal connection to the protagonist’s occupation as a film critic promises an intriguing narrative. As the film enters production, fans and critics alike eagerly await the opportunity to experience Tarantino’s final cinematic masterpiece.
