Public Uprising! France Bans TikTok

France has banned TikTok in New Caledonia, its overseas territory, amid significant public unrest following changes to the election law. The unrest led to four deaths, prompting the declaration of a state of emergency in the region, severely restricting civil rights and imposing a TikTok ban.

Digital Censorship from Europe to the South Pacific! France Bans TikTok

New Caledonia, under French control since 1853, recently saw its election laws changed by the French National Assembly. This new law grants voting rights to French citizens who have settled in the region in the past 10 years. The largest ethnic group in the area, the Kanak people, reacted strongly, taking to the streets in protest. As the demonstrations escalated, four people lost their lives and at least 130 were arrested. To control the situation and quell the protests, France decided to ban TikTok.

Why Did France Implement This Law?

According to Bloomberg, New Caledonia is a significant player in the nickel industry, becoming one of the world’s largest exporters since 1864. This lucrative position has caused significant discontent among the Kanak people, who make up 44% of the population. France introduced the voting law to maintain its political influence in the region, particularly given New Caledonia’s strategic proximity to China and Australia in the context of the New Cold War.

How Long Will France’s TikTok Ban Last?

ABC News reports that the state of emergency will last for 12 days, during which a curfew from 6 PM to 6 AM will be enforced. The duration or permanence of the TikTok ban is still uncertain. TikTok has not yet responded to inquiries from ABC regarding the ban. France has deployed an additional 500 police officers to the region, supplementing the existing 1,800 officers to manage the situation.

What is Nickel?

Nickel is a chemical element that has been used extensively in industry for a long time. It is crucial for the production of stainless steel, batteries, jet engines, and various other industrial and technological applications, making it vital for the global economy. Nickel is particularly important in the manufacturing of batteries for electric vehicles, playing a key role in clean energy technologies.
