Microsoft Announces Impact of Windows Crisis: How Many Devices Were Affected?

The CrowdStrike crisis has crashed 8.5 million Windows devices. Microsoft has stated that the issue originated from CrowdStrike. Here are the details…

CrowdStrike Crisis Crashes 8.5 Million Windows Devices Affected Windows users reported encountering blue screen errors on their computers and servers. The interruptions caused by the update led to disruptions in the operations of numerous companies, ranging from airlines to banking institutions.

The CrowdStrike software was supposed to be installed only on corporate systems with automatic updates enabled. However, Microsoft revealed that the update impacted Windows versions as far back as Windows 7. It even affected devices with automatic updates disabled. According to Microsoft, the issue was caused by a misconfigured file in one of the daily updates. This file forced systems to access an incorrect memory address, resulting in the blue screen error.

Microsoft confirmed that 8.5 million devices experienced the outage. However, this number represents less than 1% of all Windows devices. Therefore, despite the significant number, the scale of the disruption was not considered enormous due to Windows’ large market share.

The financial cost of the CrowdStrike error remains unclear. Nevertheless, following the global outage news, the company’s stock price dropped by 11%, reducing its market value to $74 billion. What are your thoughts? Share your opinions in the comments section below.
