M4 iPad Pro Bend Test: Thinness Could Be Its Achilles’ Heel

Apple’s Thinnest iPads Put to the Test

Apple’s newly launched 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models, boasting a sleek profile of 5.3 mm and 5.1 mm respectively, are the company’s thinnest devices to date. While this design offers enhanced portability, concerns have been raised about their durability and resistance to bending.

How Durable Are the New iPad Pros?

A YouTuber conducted a bend test on both models, with generally positive results. When bent horizontally, neither model suffered any damage to the casing or screen, suggesting the internal stiffening plate is effective. However, the 13-inch model showed weakness when bent vertically, with the thin area near the USB-C port cracking under pressure. It’s been suggested that Apple could address this issue by reinforcing the area around the USB-C port.

OLED Display Shows Impressive Heat Resistance

One of the most surprising findings of the durability test was the resilience of the 13-inch iPad Pro’s OLED display. It withstood direct heat from a flame with no apparent damage, a notable feat considering the susceptibility of most OLED screens to heat. Apple’s tandem OLED design seems to have paid off in this regard.

Apple’s Thinnest Devices Since the iPod Nano

Apple claims these are its thinnest devices since the iPod Nano, available in Silver and Space Gray with a 100% recycled aluminum enclosure.
