Kenworth SuperTruck 2: A Hybrid Tractor that Resembles a High-Speed Train

Kenworth SuperTruck 2 is equipped with a 48V mild hybrid system paired with a diesel engine, drawing attention with its body design that reduces aerodynamic friction by up to 48%. As technology advances, pushing technical limits, designs also undergo evolution. This evolution can be summarized briefly from the image above. Kenworth showcases the latest advancements in tractor technology with its new eco-friendly model, SuperTruck 2.

Tractors and trucks, which undertake heavy duties, still rely on diesel engines. Although fully electric counterparts like the Tesla Semi have been introduced, they have not yet become widespread for long-haul usage. Unlike these, SuperTruck 2 combines a diesel engine with a 48V mild hybrid system.

With a design resembling more like a high-speed train than a tractor, the vehicle pushes the limits of reducing aerodynamic friction. Apart from its interesting body shape, the use of cameras instead of traditional side mirrors and concealing wheels behind flat panels has led to a reduction in the coefficient of aerodynamic friction by up to 48%. Besides its unique body design, the cabin of the SuperTruck 2 is also striking. Featuring a center-aligned driver section with a 15-inch digital display panel, it offers customizable interfaces and user-friendly menus, making operation extremely easy.

Powered by a 440 hp PACCAR MX-11 engine integrated with next-generation lithium-ion batteries, the hybrid system of the SuperTruck 2 enables the vehicle to be equipped with electric fans, electric steering, as well as electric cooling and climate control pumps, contributing to its overall efficiency. Additionally, the vehicle’s trailer surprisingly lightweight. Kenworth states that the total weight of both the tractor and trailer is 11,839 kg. This is reported to be 3,221 kg lighter than a typical vehicle in use today.

To achieve this, 10 concept tires have been used, saving 161 kg in weight. Furthermore, thanks to the efficient engine, the fuel tank has been reduced to around 300 liters without sacrificing range.

Although the vehicle is equipped with a diesel engine, the company states that the design is compatible with fuel cells, hydrogen tanks, natural gas tanks, or batteries. This offers flexibility for transitioning to various energy sources in the future.
