iOS 18 Allows You to Lock Apps with Face ID

A highly anticipated security and privacy feature is coming with iOS 18, allowing iPhone users to lock apps using Face ID. For years, iPhone users have wanted to secure personal apps like Photos and Messages with a password, but Apple has yet to offer this privacy feature. Recent reports indicate that the iOS 18 update will finally allow this.

Face ID Protection for Built-In Apps

With iOS 18, iPhone users will be able to protect all built-in apps, including Photos, Mail, Messages, Phone, Notes, Safari, Settings, and others, using Face ID, Touch ID, or their lock screen password. It is still unclear whether this feature will be available for third-party apps from the App Store.

Currently, Apple allows locking specific content such as notes in the Notes app and photos in the “Recently Deleted” and “Hidden” albums within the Photos app using Face ID, Touch ID, or a password. The new iOS 18 feature will ensure that apps can be fully locked even if the iPhone itself is unlocked, thus enhancing security and privacy. While there are existing methods to lock apps using Screen Time or Shortcuts, these will no longer be necessary with iOS 18.

The iOS 18 beta release is expected to follow immediately after the WWDC24 event. What do you think about this new security feature? Share your thoughts with us…
