Apple has released an urgent update today, addressing a security vulnerability in its iCloud services. In recent months, iCloud has been at the center of controversy due to data leaks that affected numerous users. Following this breach, deleted data reappeared, leading to unwanted tensions among users. Today, with the sudden release of a security update, iCloud is back in the spotlight. But the question remains: is iCloud secure?
iOS/iPadOS 17.6.1 Released for Enhanced Data Protection on iCloud
With the iOS 16.2 update, Apple introduced the Advanced Data Protection feature, which aimed to secure nearly all iCloud services with end-to-end encryption. This feature was designed to enhance the security of Appleโs cloud services. However, it seems that the recent iOS 17.6 update has introduced a serious and unexpected vulnerability.
Although the specifics of the vulnerability have not been officially disclosed, the update notes merely state:
โThis update includes important bug fixes and resolves an issue that prevented the activation or deactivation of Advanced Data Protection.โ
In addition to the iOS 17.6.1 update, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1 and macOS Ventura 13.6.9 updates were also released to address the same issue. While it’s unclear if any other security issues have been fixed, Apple has only identified this problem as related to Advanced Data Protection.
If you’re using an iPhone with iOS 17.6 or a Mac or iPad running the corresponding versions, it is highly recommended to update your devices immediately. Meanwhile, Apple is gearing up to announce iOS 18 following the release of the iPhone 16 series.
