Huawei Launches Kirin-Powered Desktop Computer Despite U.S. Restrictions

Huawei, in response to U.S. sanctions, is expanding its processor lineup with the introduction of the Huawei Qingyun W515x and W585x desktop computers, powered by the Kirin 9000C. Known for making a splash with the Mate 60, powered by the Kirin 9000S, Huawei continues to innovate with its new desktop offerings.

Huawei Qingyun W515x Unveiled

The Kirin 9000C processor, co-developed by Huawei and SMIC, is an 8-core, 12-thread chip that can reach clock speeds of up to 2.48GHz. Facing challenges in procuring products from Intel and Qualcomm due to U.S. sanctions, Huawei aims to expand its presence in the desktop computer market with this processor.

Huawei’s MateBook laptops typically feature AMD Ryzen and Intel processors. However, the Qingyun W515x model, launched in China, is powered by the Kirin 9000C, highlighting Huawei’s shift towards more localized solutions.

Specifications and Configurations

The Qingyun W515x offers various configurations to cater to different users. It is available with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM and storage options ranging from 256GB SSD to a combination of 512GB SSD and 1TB HDD. The more affordable W585x model comes with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD.

Software and Ecosystem

On the software front, Huawei has opted for its own Tongxin operating system, which is different from HarmonyOS. The Tongxin OS will come in KOS 2403 and UOS 1070 versions. This move towards an independent software ecosystem reflects Huawei’s goal of creating a self-reliant technological environment, especially given the limitations imposed by U.S. sanctions.

Market Availability and Future Prospects

The price of the Qingyun W515x remains undisclosed for now, but the model is expected to go on sale in China in the coming weeks. It will be interesting to see how Huawei performs in this market with its new offerings.
