Honda to Invest $65 Billion in Electric Vehicle Development

Honda has announced a significant investment of 10 trillion yen (approximately $65 billion) in electric vehicle (EV) technologies as part of its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The investment will focus on three main areas: introducing electric vehicles exclusively under the Honda brand, establishing a comprehensive EV battery value chain, and developing EV production technologies and facilities.

Investment Breakdown

Honda plans to allocate its investment as follows:

  1. New Factory Systems and Vehicle Design: 6 trillion yen
  2. Software Research and Development (R&D): 2 trillion yen
  3. Battery Production: 2 trillion yen

With these investments, Honda aims to reduce battery costs by 20% and EV production costs by 35%. The company’s ambitious plan includes the production of more than 2 million electric vehicles by 2030, with EVs and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) making up 40% of its global car sales by that year. Honda maintains its target for EV and FCEV solutions to account for 100% of its global vehicle sales by 2040.

Introduction of the 0 Series

Honda’s electrification strategy includes the global launch of the Honda 0 Series, which represents a major transformation towards electrification. By 2030, the 0 Series will feature seven models ranging from mini vehicles to large sports cars.

Expansion into Electric Motorcycles and Large Transportation

In addition to cars, Honda is expanding its electric vehicle portfolio to include motorcycles. The company will introduce two models in 2024 and four models in 2026, all utilizing the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: (MPP) with interchangeable battery packs.

Honda believes electric vehicles are the most effective solution for small transportation products such as motorcycles and cars. The company is also investing in larger transportation vehicles, including planes and large marine vessels. For these larger vehicles, Honda is exploring sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and e-fuel as high-potential solutions for achieving zero environmental impact.

Commitment to a Carbon-Neutral Future

Honda’s investment reflects its commitment to a carbon-neutral future and its determination to lead in the EV market. The company’s strategic focus on battery technology, software development, and innovative production methods is designed to make electric vehicles more accessible and cost-effective, ensuring a sustainable future for transportation.
