Google Surpasses Apple in Software Support Duration

Apple has officially acknowledged that Google Pixel’s software support duration surpasses that of Apple devices in a document submitted to the UK government. Last fall, Google announced an impressive 8-year software support promise for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, surprising many and marking a significant lead over Apple’s 5-year support period.

Pixel’s Software Support Outshines Apple’s

In response, Samsung also made a swift move by extending the software support for its smartphones to 7 years, positioning itself as a reliable choice for those seeking long-lasting Android phones. This confirmation from Apple substantiates that iPhones receive updates for only 5 years. Android blog writer Mishaal Rahman recently examined documents Apple provided to the UK. Apple recently submitted a document detailing its product security and telecom infrastructure policies.

Known as the PSTI, this system mandates that any company selling internet-connected devices must specifically outline their security and support policies to protect consumer rights. In the document, Apple states that its devices receive updates for 5 years from their release date. However, Apple doesn’t always adhere strictly to this limit. Currently, the oldest phones receiving the iOS 17 update are the iPhone XR and iPhone XS, which are nearly 6 years old. Some unverified sources suggest these devices might even receive iOS 18.

Officially, Google leads with an 8-year support period for Pixel, followed by Samsung with 7 years, and Apple with 5 years. Consequently, Android devices enjoy 2-3 years more software support compared to iPhones. While some Android users on forums see this as a clear advantage, some Apple users argue that Android phones are being pushed beyond their limits.
