Google is set to discontinue one of its once-popular applications, the PDF reader “Stack”, which originated from its experimental development hub, Area120. As the tech giant continues to refine its ecosystem, less frequently used apps are systematically being phased out. Here’s why Google Stack is closing down and what this means for its users.
Google Stack to Shut Down in September
Originally launched by Google’s Area120, an incubator known for experimental apps, Stack was designed to allow users to scan, store, and organize documents such as receipts, assignments, and other paperwork digitally. Known formally as “Stack: PDF Scanner by Google Area 120,” the app gained popularity for its practical utility and user-friendly features.
However, as Google Drive expanded its capabilities, features once unique to Stack began to appear within Drive. Notably, the “Scan” feature introduced to Drive in November mirrored Stack’s functionality, leading to overlap between the two services. This redundancy, combined with increased adoption of Google Drive, led to a gradual decline in Stack’s user base.
The integration of Stack’s features into Google Drive, combined with the closure of the Area120 incubator, signals the end of the road for Stack. Google is focusing on streamlining its app offerings, pushing users towards more comprehensive solutions that consolidate functionality.
Transitioning from Stack to Drive
For Stack users concerned about the fate of their stored documents, Google has provided a solution to ensure a smooth transition. Users are advised to use the “Transfer all documents to Drive” tool found under “Account > Settings” within Stack. This feature will automatically move all saved documents to a new folder in Drive named “Stack”, preserving the data seamlessly.
Google’s decision to sunset Stack and bolster Drive’s capabilities reflects a strategic move towards unifying its productivity suite, reducing app redundancy, and enhancing overall user experience with more integrated services.
