Firefox Revisits the Long-Delayed Artificial Intelligence Feature

Mozilla Firefox, once the titan of internet browsers, is revisiting its previously announced feature from last May—the introduction of an artificial intelligence bar. This move is part of Firefox’s strategy to regain its footing in the browser market, which it has been steadily losing to competitors like Chrome and Edge.

In recent years, Firefox has experienced significant declines, prompting the company to innovate continually in an attempt to recapture its user base. The next big step for the company appears to be the integration of a new sidebar and a surprise artificial intelligence model, which may bring innovative solutions to the users.

Firefox: From Market Leader to Underdog
Launched by Mozilla in 2004 as a rival to the then-dominant Internet Explorer 6, Firefox quickly shattered the competition, gaining immense popularity. Known during its development phase as Project Phoenix, it managed to dismantle its Microsoft competitor swiftly.

However, by 2012, despite achieving a market share peak of 42%, Firefox began to lose ground. The ascent of Chrome, which became more stable with each update, and Microsoft’s successful pivot to the Chromium-based Edge, significantly diminished Firefox’s market presence. By June 2024, Firefox was found on only 3% of computers.

Firefox’s Attempt at a Comeback with Artificial Intelligence
Last year, Mozilla announced plans to integrate famous AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude into Firefox. However, a year has passed, and these features have not been implemented. According to recent updates from the company, these AI capabilities will soon be available to users.

Additionally, Mozilla is developing a tool called ‘Firefox Summary,’ which is expected to help users generate summaries of web pages. Although no specific launch dates have been provided for these features, they are expected to be released by the end of the year.
