In a significant advancement for renewable energy, China has inaugurated the world’s largest solar power plant. Located in the Xinjiang region, the Xinjiang Midong solar project boasts an impressive capacity of 3.5 gigawatts and contains over 5.26 million solar panels, enough to power approximately 100 million LED bulbs.
Xinjiang’s Giant Leap in Solar Energy
Spanning over 32,947 acres, this colossal facility is expected to produce around 6.09 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This output is sufficient to meet the annual energy requirements of countries as large as Papua New Guinea. The project, which was constructed in phases, represents a total investment of $2.13 billion. It features state-of-the-art monocrystalline dual-glass PV panels and transmission lines stretching 129 miles.
Solar energy accounted for about 4.5% of the global electricity supply in 2022, with this figure increasing each year. China was responsible for 38% of the new solar capacity added globally in 2022, significantly influencing the growth of this sector. The European Union and the United States followed, contributing 17% and 15%, respectively.
