Celestial Connectivity: China Launches Smart Skynet Satellite Constellation for Global Internet Access

China has begun testing its own satellite internet technology. China has started developing its own satellite constellation aimed at providing space-based internet services, launching its first test satellite in this direction. On May 9, China launched the first satellite of the Smart Skynet constellation, which aims to provide broadband internet access. This launch marks a significant milestone in China’s efforts to develop space-based internet infrastructure.

The inaugural member of the Smart Skynet satellite constellation, Smart SkyNet-1 01, was successfully launched from the Sichang Cosmodrome in the southwestern Sichuan province of China, aboard a Long March-3B rocket. Unlike its American competitor, Starlink, the satellite was placed in a higher orbit.

Expansion to 16 to 32 satellites China’s Smart Skynet satellite constellation will ultimately be expanded to include 16 to 32 satellites, providing capacity to deliver internet access to the entire globe. This presents a significant opportunity for people living in areas with limited or no internet access. A spokesperson for the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) stated after the launch that the satellite had been placed in orbit and entered the testing phase. They remarked, “Once completed, the network will provide personalized broadband services worldwide without blind spots.”
