BYD’s Affordable Electric Car Hits Europe! Here’s the Price

Chinese automotive giant BYD is making headlines with its decision to bring its most affordable electric vehicle, the BYD Seagull, to Europe. Although not officially launched yet, the $10,000 Seagull is already creating a buzz due to its remarkably low price.

BYD Seagull: Affordable Electric Car for the European Market

Earlier this year, BYD declared a revolutionary shift away from gasoline-powered vehicles by introducing the Seagull Honor Edition, its cheapest electric car. Now, with a starting price of just $9,700, the new BYD Seagull is poised to stir the European market, causing concern among competito

The BYD Seagull is powered by BYD’s advanced Blade batteries and is available in two variants with 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh battery packs, offering a CLTC range between 305 km and 405 km.

Despite its low price, the Seagull boasts a minimalist interior design, highlighted by a 10.1-inch rotating central screen. This compact EV, designed under the leadership of former Lamborghini designer Wolfgang Egger, has even earned the nickname “mini Lamborghini.”

Features and Pricing

The BYD Seagull is available in three different trims in China. The base (Active) model starts at under $10,000, while the mid-range version is priced at $10,500. Ford CEO Jim Farley has praised the Seagull, acknowledging it as a well-made vehicle. This entry into the European market is expected to ignite new competition, particularly affecting major players like Volkswagen and Stellantis.

Despite customs duties, BYD plans to offer the Seagull in Europe for less than €20,000. Additionally, BYD aims to launch another higher-priced electric vehicle in Europe, priced around €25,000. To mitigate the impact of EU import tariffs on Chinese-made electric cars, BYD is also planning to establish two factories in Europe.

Potential US Market Impact

Should the BYD Seagull make its way to the US, its price is likely to be higher due to import tariffs and other regulatory costs. However, if BYD can maintain a competitive price point, it could significantly disrupt the US market, providing an affordable electric vehicle option for American consumers.
