Boeing’s spacecraft stuck in space: CST-100 Starliner faces challenges at the ISS!

Space has always been both a subject of human curiosity and concern. Throughout history, humanity has continuously explored the vast and endless universe to satisfy its curiosity. Alongside this exploration, aviation and aerospace companies have emerged. One of these companies, Boeing, is currently experiencing unfortunate days with its spacecraft. Here are the details…

Boeing CST-100 Starliner spacecraft stranded at the International Space Station!

Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner spacecraft has been stranded at the International Space Station (ISS). Initially planned to start its first crewed mission on May 6, the spacecraft finally reached the ISS in early June after several delays. However, its return has been postponed multiple times, and NASA has now announced that the Starliner could return no earlier than July 2.

The delay is due to helium leaks detected in the craft’s propulsion system. Helium is used to operate the vehicle’s thrusters. This issue was present before launch but was not considered serious enough to halt the mission. Yet, in an unexpected turn, NASA and Boeing engineers are now grappling with what was initially seen as a minor issue.

Michael Lembeck, a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Illinois, mentions that there could be several causes for helium leaks. Components may have been improperly assembled, or other factors could be affecting the helium tanks. However, one thing is certain: the issue needs to be resolved.

There are also some concerns about the safety of astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams aboard Starliner. However, NASA has stated that there is enough helium on board for the return journey. During a press conference on June 18, it was mentioned that the spacecraft needs seven hours of helium for the return and has 70 hours of helium available.

While everything might seem appropriate on paper, any further leakage could lead to serious problems and significant consequences. What do you think about this situation? Don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments section…
