According to market research firm Sensor Tower, Apple users spent nearly twice as much on the App Store compared to Android users on Google Play in the first quarter of 2024. Sensor Tower’s data indicates that Apple iPhone users spent approximately $25 billion on the App Store in the first quarter of 2024. Interestingly, the number of downloads on Google Play was three times that of the App Store. Specifically, Google Play saw 25.5 billion downloads compared to 8.4 billion downloads on the App Store. Despite the higher download volume, Google Play generated significantly less revenue, indicating that Android users are less inclined to pay for apps.

The revenue from the App Store grew by 11.5% year-over-year, while Google Play’s revenue increased by only 5.3%. The majority of spending on both platforms was on games. Apple users spent $13 billion on games and $11.6 billion on other types of software in the first quarter. For Android users, a higher proportion of spending (65%) was on games.

The top countries contributing to this spending were the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. This global trend underscores the more significant financial engagement of Apple users with the App Store.
