Android’s New ‘Collections’ Feature Will Keep You Glued to Your Phone

Google is introducing a feature called ‘Collections’ to Android, which seems designed to keep users hooked on their apps. Unveiled at this year’s Google I/O developer conference, this feature aims to enhance interaction with the apps on your device. But how does it work?

What is Android’s ‘Collections’ Feature?

The ‘Collections’ feature will allow Android users to follow the most important updates and contents from their apps directly from their home screen. Initially known under the code name “Cubes,” this feature was detailed through an APK analysis by Android Authority. It uses a Play Store-supported widget to organize app updates into categories such as “Watch,” “Listen,” “Read,” “Games,” “Social,” and “Shopping.”

Essentially, a widget will appear on your home screen. This widget automatically organizes the best and most common contents from the apps installed on your device, enticing you back into those apps. Google doesn’t want you to miss out on any notifications. Instead of just sending notifications, these updates will also appear on a small window on your home screen.

For instance, online shopping apps might remind you of items in your cart to encourage you to continue your shopping journey. Your favorite food ordering app might invite you to order your favorite dish. Reddit might urge you to read and vote on interesting posts, while Spotify might highlight your favorite playlists.

Google has also mentioned that developers can use the Collections feature to offer “personalized recommendations and promotions,” making it easier for you to discover other contents and deals you may have missed. Initially, this feature will be available in the USA and will later expand to other markets. It can also be accessed easily through a long-press shortcut on the Play Store app.

This feature is expected to start rolling out to Android devices later this year, with a more formal introduction expected at the “Made by Google” event in August.

What do you think about this new feature? Do you believe it will enhance your app usage experience, or is it just another way to keep you glued to your screen? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
