Android 14 Update for Smart TVs: A New Era of Performance and Features

Google Revamps the Smart TV Experience

Announced at Google I/O, Android 14 is set to revolutionize the smart TV experience with a host of exciting new features and performance enhancements. Let’s dive into the details of what Android TV OS has in store for us.

New Features That Will Transform Your TV Time

  • Picture-in-Picture (PiP) Mode: One of the most notable additions is PiP mode, allowing you to use a second app in a small window while another app runs in full screen. This means you can keep an eye on live scores while watching a game, or continue watching TV while on a video or voice call.
  • Energy-Saving Modes: Android 14 introduces three energy modes to optimize power consumption: Low Power Mode (disconnects network when TV is idle), Elevated Power Mode (keeps network active for Google Home functions), and Optimized Power Mode (maintains network for essential features only).
  • Performance Boost and Faster Startup: The update promises improved performance and faster startup times, even on low-memory devices. In some cases, startup times can be reduced to as little as 4 seconds.
  • Enhanced Accessibility: Android 14 brings a range of accessibility improvements, including color correction, text options for visually impaired users, and easier navigation for those with motor impairments.

A Modern and Efficient User Experience

Google is encouraging developers to transition from the old Leanback UI toolkit to the new Compose for TV system, which will result in more modern and user-friendly apps. Additionally, Google’s shift from APKs to app bundles will save up to 20% in storage space.

Android TV OS Continues to Grow

With 220 million monthly active devices, Android TV OS has seen a 47% increase compared to last year. The new PiP mode and energy-saving features are expected to further enhance the user experience and eliminate sluggishness.
