The European Union’s Commitment to Protect the Ocean
In a bid to safeguard the ocean and promote sustainability, the European Union (EU) has announced that it will allocate 3.5 billion euros ($3.71 billion) towards a series of initiatives this year. These commitments were unveiled during the annual “Our Ocean” conference held in Athens, which saw the participation of approximately 120 countries.
Addressing Marine Pollution and Supporting Sustainable Fisheries
The EU’s commitments encompass a wide range of actions, including efforts to combat marine pollution and promote sustainable fisheries. A total of 14 investments and one reform in sustainable fisheries, amounting to around 1.9 billion euros, will be supported in Cyprus, Greece, Poland, and Portugal. Additionally, 980 million euros from the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) will be allocated to Cyprus, Finland, Greece, Italy, and Spain to fund four investments and two reforms aimed at tackling marine pollution.
Promoting the Blue Economy and Supporting African Countries
The EU’s initiatives also focus on the development of the blue economy, which involves the sustainable use of marine and freshwater resources for economic activity. Moreover, the EU aims to assist African countries in advancing their blue economy efforts.
During the conference, a Greek government official revealed that more than 400 new commitments, amounting to a staggering $10 billion, will be announced. These commitments underscore the global community’s dedication to protecting the ocean and ensuring its long-term sustainability.
The Urgency of Ocean Conservation
The EU’s commitment to protecting the ocean comes at a crucial time. Recent data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service indicates that ocean temperatures reached a record high in February, surpassing records dating back to 1979. This alarming trend highlights the urgency of addressing climate change and its impact on the world’s oceans.
In addition to rising temperatures, overfishing and plastic pollution pose significant threats to the health of our oceans. These issues require immediate attention and concerted efforts from governments, organizations, and individuals worldwide.

The “Our Ocean” conference has played a pivotal role in mobilizing international commitments to protect the ocean since its inception in 2014. To date, it has generated over 2,160 commitments worth approximately $130 billion. The conference serves as a platform for countries to come together, share knowledge, and collaborate on solutions to the challenges facing our oceans.
By allocating significant funding and resources towards ocean protection, the EU is demonstrating its commitment to preserving this vital ecosystem.
