Volkswagen, after halting discussions with Renault, is now independently developing an electric car that will cost under 20,000 Euros. The company aims to compete with low-cost electric vehicles from China with this new model. Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume emphasized that this project is “from Europe, for Europe.”
The ID.2 model, a key part of Volkswagen’s electric vehicle strategy, will debut with a starting price of 25,000 Euros. However, the affordable electric car model set to be introduced in 2027 is expected to cost under 20,000 Euros. Although it is referred to as the ID.1, the official name has yet to be confirmed. Volkswagen’s brand manager, Thomas Schaefer, stated that this new “entry-level” electric car will set high standards in technology, design, and quality.
Schaefer also highlighted the need for political support and competitive conditions to ensure the success of electric mobility in Europe, noting that state support is crucial. Volkswagen believes that the European Union’s proposed tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles will not be effective in the long term. The company predicts that Chinese automakers will eventually establish factories in Europe. Therefore, Volkswagen is focusing on reducing costs, anticipating that European car manufacturers will have 2-3 years to prepare for cost competition.
