Tesla’s Autonomous Driving Feature FSD Receives Major Update

Tesla continually updates its Full Self-Driving (FSD) autonomous driving feature, and CEO Elon Musk has indicated that the upcoming FSD v12.4 update is quite significant. Tesla has placed a substantial portion of its future plans on fully autonomous robotaxis, with the Tesla Robotaxi set to be unveiled in August 2024. As the company works toward this vision, it continues to refine its Full Self-Driving (FSD) autonomous driving feature, with Musk claiming that the approaching FSD v12.4 update is extensive.

Tesla Updates FSD Software

According to Musk, FSD is the best autonomous driving feature in a vehicle, and Tesla is close to releasing a fully autonomous driving system. While Musk is known for his tendency to exaggerate, there might be some truth to his claims. The company has received positive feedback from users with its current FSD 12.3.x versions and is actively working on the FSD v12.4 update, which is expected to be released next week.

Musk mentioned on X (formerly Twitter) that FSD v12.4 features almost entirely retrained models. He noted that they were finishing the final touches, focusing on comfort because sometimes the system could accelerate or brake too quickly. The new version is expected to require fewer micro-adjustments in FSD (Supervised) mode compared to unsupervised driving. To increase FSD’s capabilities, Tesla has expanded and continues to expand its systems used for training and operating the software with thousands of Nvidia GPUs. According to the CEO, Tesla is no longer limited by computational power, providing the FSD team with ample resources to train neural networks.

It’s worth remembering that Tesla made FSD software free for a month a few weeks ago, collecting extensive data that proved valuable during the training process. Additionally, Musk mentioned that versions 12.5 and 12.6 are already in testing. Tesla is working on resolving issues like encountering a blocked road on a multi-directional route, requiring the vehicle to find a new path. In cases where a road closure is detected, the Tesla vehicle will also relay this information to the rest of the fleet.
