Tesla Reduces Model Y Production in China Amid Falling Sales

Tesla has significantly reduced the production of its Model Y at the Shanghai factory due to declining demand. The company’s market share in China has decreased, prompting this production cut. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, Tesla produced 49,498 Model Y units in March and 36,610 units in April at its Shanghai facility. These figures represent a 17.7% and 33% decline, respectively, compared to the same period last year. Reports indicate that Tesla plans to reduce Model Y production by at least 20% from March through June.

Production Shift at Shanghai Factory

Tesla’s Shanghai factory is responsible for manufacturing both the Model 3 and Model Y. Despite the decrease in Model Y production, the factory’s total output for the first four months of the year was 287,359 vehicles, a 5% drop compared to the same period in 2023. Interestingly, while Model Y production has decreased, Model 3 production has increased by 10%.

Declining Market Share in China

Tesla aims to sell 2 million vehicles globally this year, with 600,000 to 700,000 of those sales expected to come from China. This target suggests that Tesla is anticipating similar sales figures to last year. However, Tesla’s market share in China’s rapidly growing electric vehicle market is shrinking. The company’s market share dropped from 7.8% in the first four months of last year to 6.8% in the same period this year.

Developing a More Affordable Model

To remain competitive in terms of pricing, Tesla is reportedly working on a more affordable model, rumored to be called Model 2. Initially, it was believed that this new model would be developed from scratch. However, recent reports suggest that it will be a simplified version based on the Model 3 and Model Y.
