Porsche Macan Review – A Sporty SUV Recharged

OVERVIEW The Porsche Macan is the brand’s mid-sized SUV, its best-selling model in the UK, and generally a gateway to Porsche ownership. With the transition to an electric powertrain, the Macan hasn’t lost any of its appeal—if anything, it’s become even more intriguing. If the Cayenne is too big for your taste, then the Macan might be the most versatile Porsche-badged daily driver you can get. The electric-only Macan does not disappoint.

WHAT’S ON OFFER? The new Macan is built on Porsche’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE), shared across Volkswagen Group brands like Audi and Bentley. While it shares some underpinnings with the Audi Q6 e-Tron and the upcoming Audi A6 e-Tron, the Porsche Macan has its own distinct characteristics. It features different rear motor positioning, unique electronics, and sharper steering, along with Porsche’s suite of handling aids to create a more dynamic driving experience.

Initially, there will be two models: the Macan 4 and the Macan Turbo, both featuring dual motors for all-wheel drive and powered by a 100kWh battery pack. The 95kWh usable capacity delivers a potential range of 380 miles for the Macan 4 and 367 miles for the Turbo. In real-world terms, this should be well over 200 miles—sufficient for most uses.

Both models are quick: the Macan 4 can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 5.2 seconds, while the Turbo does it in just 3.3 seconds, matching the Porsche 911 GT3. Note that these speeds are during full-throttle launches; the Macan 4 produces around 385bhp during normal driving and 408bhp at full throttle. Similarly, the Turbo produces about 580bhp under light conditions and up to 635bhp/833lb-ft when pushed hard. The Turbo has a more potent rear motor, which accounts for its additional power.

Both models support 800-volt charging with a maximum power of 270kW, allowing for a 10-80% charge in around 20 minutes. They also offer a “bank charge” feature, which splits the battery into two segments for more efficient charging on a 400-volt charger, eliminating the need for the Taycan’s (more expensive) high-voltage booster.

WHAT ELSE IS NEW? The interior has undergone significant changes, featuring a built-in Android system, a large head-up display, a responsive touchscreen interface, and numerous screens for various controls. The seats are 28mm lower than the ICE variant, the trunk capacity is a generous 480 liters, and there’s a “frunk” (front trunk) for extra storage space. Overall, the new electric Macan is more practical than its combustion-engine predecessors.

DOES IT DRIVE LIKE A PORSCHE? This is the critical question, and the answer is yes, albeit with an electric twist. There’s a lot of weight to manage, but Porsche’s engineering ensures a stable and engaging driving experience. The Turbo model comes standard with air suspension, while the Macan 4 has traditional steel springs with air suspension available as an option. The optional rear-wheel steering enhances maneuverability in tight spaces and stability at higher speeds.

The Macan 4, priced at around $69,800, is slower than the Turbo but still offers plenty of speed for most drivers. The Macan Turbo, priced at about $95,000, can keep pace with some sports cars. Both models offer a range of driving modes to suit different conditions and preferences.

THE VERDICT “If you’re looking for an incredibly well-rounded daily driver that can handle everyday life, the Macan stands out.”

Porsche has not dulled the Macan’s charm with its electric transition. The new electric Macan retains the brand’s characteristic speed, comfort, and build quality while offering even greater practicality. The main appeal lies in its versatility: it’s a comfortable car in town, yet it handles twisty roads with aplomb. While other mid-sized electric SUVs fall short, the Macan stands out. Although it’s not cheap, it offers Porsche’s hallmark quality and performance, making it one of the best in its class
