Old EV Batteries Get a New Lease on Life Thanks to Allye Energy and Jaguar Land Rover Partnership

In a groundbreaking collaboration, startup Allye Energy and automotive giant Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) are breathing new life into old electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This innovative project is transforming used batteries into a new battery energy storage system (BESS) called Allye Max, providing a second chance for these power sources and contributing to sustainable energy solutions.

Giving Old EV Batteries a Second Chance

The project utilizes seven old plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) battery packs from Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models. Although these batteries have seen their capacity drop below 80%, making them unsuitable for continued use in vehicles, they are still viable for energy storage applications. The BESS units can power infrastructure and tools at construction sites, portable office trailers, and mini excavators.

According to Jaguar Land Rover, an average diesel generator consumes about 16 liters of fuel per hour, equating to an emission of 129,012 kg of CO2 daily. By using BESS, JLR’s engineering team expects to save 15,494 kg of CO2 annually, which is comparable to seven round-trip flights from London to New York for a single passenger.

A Significant Step Towards a Circular Supply Chain

Reuben Chorley, JLR’s Director of Sustainable Industrial Operations, highlighted the project’s importance in achieving their circular supply chain goals. Second-life battery projects like this are crucial for JLR’s ambition to become carbon neutral by 2039.

The collaboration between Allye Energy and Jaguar Land Rover is a major environmental win, preventing old car batteries from ending up in landfills and extending the life of valuable materials. Similar initiatives are underway globally: B2U Storage Solutions uses old Honda and Nissan EV batteries to store solar energy for California’s electric grid, while Nissan repurposes old Leaf batteries as emergency power sources. A startup founded by former Lamborghini employees also uses old EV batteries for various energy storage applications.
