The Night Mode feature, which we all use on our smartphones to make it easier to sleep by making the screen yellowish, might actually be ineffective. Indeed, the feature known as “Night Shift” or “Night Mode,” which is claimed to filter blue light and help us sleep better, has been debunked by a new study. Here are the details…
Night Mode on Smartphones Doesn’t Really Work
The feature known as “Night Shift” on Apple devices and “Night Mode” on Android devices is designed to filter blue light from the phone screen, turning the color tones warmer (yellow). The goal is to allow phone usage without straining the eyes or disrupting sleep patterns. But does this feature truly live up to these claims?

Findings of the New Study
A study conducted by Brigham Young University (BYU) and published in the journal “Sleep Health” examined the effects of this feature. Participants were divided into three groups: one with Night Shift enabled, one with Night Shift disabled, and one without any phone use. They used their phones under these conditions for seven nights.
The Surprising Result
The outcome? A twist! There was no significant difference in sleep quality among the three groups. This means that features like Night Shift and night mode do not actually provide better sleep. Professor Chad Jensen, who led the study, acknowledges that there is substantial evidence that blue light can disrupt sleep patterns.

However, the stimulating effect of phone use is not limited to just the light. The phones themselves can be mentally and psychologically stimulating. Therefore, for truly good sleep, it’s necessary to turn off phones completely.
Improving Sleep Quality
If you want to improve your sleep quality, merely turning on Night Shift might not be enough. The most effective method seems to be turning off all devices and avoiding screens at least an hour before bedtime. Do you agree with these research findings? What do you do to sleep better?
