Microsoft has released an emergency update to fix a critical Wi-Fi vulnerability identified in its latest Patch Tuesday update. This update addresses 49 CVE-labeled security flaws, with one particular vulnerability receiving a CVSS severity score of 9.8 out of 10, categorizing it as “most likely to be exploited.”
Critical Wi-Fi Vulnerability Details
The key vulnerability in question originates from a remote code execution (RCE) issue within the Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ) system. Attackers can exploit this flaw by sending specially crafted malicious MSMQ packets, enabling them to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable Windows system. This affects various versions of Windows, including Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2008 and later versions.
RCE vulnerabilities are particularly dangerous as they do not require physical access to the device. In this scenario, an attacker merely needs to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the target device. This makes public Wi-Fi networks, like those in libraries, coffee shops, or airports, especially risky for users.
Microsoft’s Response
Microsoft has stated that there is no evidence yet of this vulnerability being exploited in the wild. However, given the nature of security flaws, malicious actors often act swiftly once such vulnerabilities are disclosed. This proactive update aims to prevent potential exploitation similar to the actively exploited zero-day vulnerabilities (CVE-2024-30040 and CVE-2024-30051) patched in May 2024.
