EU’s Trade Threat to China: “We Will Protect Our Economy”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen issued stern warnings as the European Union’s (EU) trade relations with China become increasingly strained. Von der Leyen highlighted China’s disruptive impact on the EU market, stating, “We will not hesitate to take tough measures to protect our economy and security.”

Following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Paris, where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the latter commented on the tensions in EU-China trade relations and indicated that the EU is prepared to take strict action if necessary to protect its economic interests.

Von der Leyen said, “A fair-playing China is good for all of us,” and emphasized, “We will defend our businesses, we will defend our economy. We will not hesitate to do what is necessary.” She expressed particular concern about the influx of Chinese-subsidized electric cars and steel into the European market.

She noted that China has not allowed EU companies fair access to its market, stating that while progress in trade talks with China could be possible, “If necessary, we are ready to fully utilize our trade defense tools. Europe cannot accept market-distorting practices.”

Before the meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron made similar remarks, saying, “The future of our continent depends on our ability to develop a balanced relationship with China,” calling for an update to the current dynamics between Brussels and Beijing.

At a time when Europe is seeking a new balance in its trade relationship with China, these firm statements and trade threats from EU leaders suggest that future trade policies may become stricter. How the trade dynamics between China and the EU will evolve remains to be seen.
