ChatGPT’s AI Memory Can ”Remember” Things Now

In February, OpenAI unveiled the Memory feature, enabling ChatGPT to store queries, prompts, and other customizations more permanently. Initially, it was accessible to a limited number of users, but now ChatGPT Plus paying subscribers outside of Europe or Korea can access it.

ChatGPT’s Memory feature enhances the chatbot’s responses in two ways, aiming for a more personalized interaction. Firstly, it allows users to instruct ChatGPT to remember specific details. Secondly, it learns from conversations similar to other algorithms in our applications. This advancement brings ChatGPT closer to functioning as a more effective AI assistant. Once it has stored your preferences, it can incorporate them seamlessly without requiring further reminders.

OpenAI acknowledges that some users may find it unsettling if chatbots possess such detailed knowledge about them. Therefore, they have emphasized that users will always retain control over what information ChatGPT stores and whether it’s used for further training.

In a blog post, OpenAI explains that, in response to feedback, ChatGPT will now inform users when memories are updated. This change from the initial test ensures transparency and allows users to manage what ChatGPT remembers. Users can review the information extracted from conversations and even choose to have ChatGPT “forget” any unwanted details, putting them in control of their privacy.

ChatGPT has always been able to recall details during ongoing conversations; for instance, if you ask the chatbot to compose an email and then follow up with “make it more professional,” it remembers the context of the conversation. However, if there’s a significant gap in time or a new conversation begins, that context is lost.

OpenAI hasn’t disclosed the reason why Memory won’t be accessible in Europe or Korea. The company has announced that Memory will be gradually introduced to subscribers of ChatGPT Enterprise and Teams, as well as custom GPTs on the GPT Store, although the exact timing hasn’t been specified.
