Apple Nearing Deal with OpenAI to Incorporate ChatGPT Features into iOS 18

Apple is on the verge of finalizing a deal with OpenAI that would bring ChatGPT features to its upcoming iPhone operating system, iOS 18, Bloomberg reports. The specifics of how the popular chatbot will be integrated into Apple’s software remain undisclosed.

This agreement marks ChatGPT as another addition to the suite of AI capabilities that Apple aims to introduce to iPhones. While Apple has also been in talks with Google to license its Gemini chatbot, no agreement has been reached thus far. Discussions between Apple and OpenAI have been ongoing since February.

At the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference next month, Apple is expected to unveil numerous AI features for iOS 18, which is rumored to be one of the most significant upgrades to the iPhone operating system in recent years. According to Haitong analyst Jeff Pu, some of these features will be run on data servers powered by Apple’s proprietary in-house chips.

In February, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed the company’s intention to pioneer advancements in AI. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported that Apple is also developing its own chatbot tool, internally referred to as “Apple GPT,” to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
