Anne Hathaway’s Experience with Chemistry Tests in the 2000s: She Was Asked to Make Out with 10 Different Men

Anne Hathaway’s Experience with Chemistry Tests in the 2000s

Anne Hathaway recently shared her experience of being asked to “make out” with ten different men during a chemistry test back in the 2000s. While this practice was considered normal at the time, Hathaway acknowledges that we now know better.

In an interview with V Magazine, Hathaway revealed that she was told she had been cast for a project and was asked if she was excited to make out with all ten guys who were coming in for the audition. However, she didn’t feel any excitement and wondered if there was something wrong with her.

As a young actress, Hathaway was aware of the potential consequences of being labeled as difficult, so she pretended to be excited and went along with it. Looking back, she found the experience to be gross, but she understood that it was a different time and people didn’t know better.

Changes in the Industry

Hathaway’s experience highlights a shift in the industry’s approach to chemistry tests. For her new film, “The Idea of You,” where she also served as a producer, Hathaway decided to conduct chemistry reads in a different way.

Instead of asking the actors to engage in physical intimacy, Hathaway asked each actor to choose a song that they felt their character would love. They would then play the song and do a short improv together. This allowed for a more comfortable and creative interaction between the actors.

The Idea of You

“The Idea of You” is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Robinne Lee. The film follows the story of a 40-year-old single mom, played by Hathaway, who falls in love with a 24-year-old international pop star, portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine.

During Galitzine’s audition, he chose a song by the Alabama Shakes. Hathaway recalled how the music instantly brought a smile to her face, and this created a relaxed and genuine connection between them. There was no need for anyone to show off or try to impress; they were simply in the moment, dancing together.

Hathaway described the experience as a spark, and the director, Michael Showalter, was beaming with joy. This new approach to chemistry tests allowed for a more authentic connection and showcased the actors’ chemistry without resorting to uncomfortable and outdated practices.

Times have changed, and the industry has become more aware of the importance of creating a safe and respectful environment for actors. Hathaway’s story serves as a reminder of how far we have come and the progress that still needs to be made.
