18 Billion Euro Treasure: The San Jose Galleon to be Recovered After 300 Years

A Sunken Treasure Emerges:
In the depths of the Caribbean Sea lies a treasure that has remained submerged for 300 years—the San Jose Galleon. The Colombian government has initiated a major recovery operation to bring this treasure to the surface, but it’s not just Colombia that’s interested. The United States, Spain, and even Bolivia have laid claims to this treasure. So, whose treasure is it, and what’s inside?

The Recovery Operation for the San Jose Galleon:
Built in 1698, the San Jose was a warship belonging to the Spanish Armada. Equipped with 64 guns, three masts, and three decks, it was one of the most valuable ships of the Spanish Empire. It played an active role in the War of Spanish Succession starting in 1701. However, in 1708, while anchored in Colombian waters, it was attacked by the British navy and sank after its ammunition depot exploded, killing 600 crew members, with only 11 survivors.

The wreck of the San Jose is believed to contain a treasure worth approximately 18 billion euros. This includes gold and silver coins, emeralds, and valuable artifacts made of glass and porcelain. However, the right to this treasure is highly contested. Colombia, Spain, and the American salvage company Sea Search Armada (SSA) all claim rights to the treasure. Moreover, indigenous communities in Bolivia argue that the treasure originally belonged to their ancestors.

The Colombian government has allocated a budget of 4.5 million dollars this year for the recovery operation. The initial phase, known as “characterization,” will involve creating a detailed map of the wreck using underwater robots and remote sensing devices. Once this phase is completed, more comprehensive archaeological digs and scientific studies are planned.

Juan David Correa, Colombia’s Minister of Culture, emphasized the significance of this operation, stating, “It is time to take ownership of this cultural heritage. History is the real treasure.” The recovery operation for the San Jose Galleon is set to unveil not just a material treasure but also a significant historical legacy.
